NATHAN JUREVICIUS

Australian illustrator Nathan Jurevicius has worked for many international companies, yet his most acclaimed project to date is Scarygirl: the cute but slightly odd abandoned girl, who was brought up by a friendly octopus and is guided by a mystic rabbit. Since her creation in 2001, Scarygirl has developed a following of fans throughout the world with a game, graphic novel, numerous limited edition vinyl toys and travelling shows. Nathan recently started a new project with illustrator Andrea Kang, called Harley and Boss.

Peter de Sève

Peter de Sève is known for his illustration work and cover art that he’s been creating for The New Yorker since 1993. He is also undoubtably one of the leading character designers in today’s animated-film industry, and has created unforgettable characters for such block-busters as “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”, “Tarzan”, “A Bug’s Life”, “Finding Nemo”, and “Robots”. He was the sole designer on “Ice Age” and its sequels, and his character “Scrat” has clearly overshadowed the entire cast and has become a world-wide icon.

CRAIG REDMAN / RINZEN

Craig Redman is part of the Australian design group Rinzen, best known for the collaborative approach of its four members and their RMX projects. He lives and works in New York. Craig’s creative output is filled with twisted optimism and simple messages executed in a colorful, bold style. He works in many media, from illustration to painting and sculpture. His character Darcel has become a fashion icon and is often featured at famed Parisian superstore Colette, where Craig recently had a solo exhibition.

RILLA ALEXANDER / RINZEN

Another member of Rinzen, Rilla Alexander moved to Berlin a few years ago with her partner Steve. Her work is influenced by vintage children books and mythical stories which inspire her to create characters with complex identities. Rilla works in illustration, graphic design and three-dimensions – her RMX project Neighbourhood (2003) was a masterpiece about plush dolls. She recently completed her first book, Her Idea, which features Sozi on her quest for ideas.

PRESENTATION_title

PICTOPLASMA PROJECT

Lars Denicke and Peter Thaler give an introduction to the phenomenon of contemporary character design in its varied manifestations and talk about the cultural implications and links of today’s aesthetics to ancient and folklore archetypes.
From their perspective, characters are not representations of living beings, but have a more animistic quality, of giving objects or mere thoughts the appearance of life.

Steven Guarnaccia, Director of the Parsons Illustration program, is accompanied by Aaron Stewart, known for his reduced, graphic style and work as an animation director in New York, Japanese artist Motomichi Nakamura, who’s trademark is the limited palette of red, black and white, and Andy Kehoe, famed for his ornamental paintings, that reflect a time when magic and monsters existed, and all the mysteries of the world were possible.
